When someone hires a professional cleaner for the first time, there's almost always some anxiety involved. I get it. You're inviting strangers into your home. You're not sure what to expect. You wonder if it will actually be worth it.
After welcoming hundreds of first-time clients into professional cleaning over the last 8 years, I want to walk you through exactly what to expect. No mystery, no surprises. Just an honest step-by-step of what will happen.
Before the Cleaning Day
Once you book your first cleaning (whether online or by phone), here's what happens in the days leading up to your appointment:
Confirmation and communication
You'll receive a confirmation of your booking with the date, time window, and what to expect. If we need any additional information (like specific access instructions, pet details, or areas you want us to focus on), we'll ask beforehand.
Preparation on your end
You don't need to clean anything โ that's our job. But 15 minutes of tidying before we arrive helps us focus on actual cleaning. See our guide on how to prepare your home before the cleaners arrive for the exact steps.
The day-before check-in
The day before, we'll send you a friendly text confirming everything is still on for tomorrow. This is your chance to ask any last questions or share special requests.
The Day of Your First Cleaning
Here's what a typical first cleaning day looks like from arrival to completion:
We arrive within your time window
Time windows are usually 30-60 minutes wide. We'll text you when we're on the way and again when we arrive. If you're not home, we let ourselves in using whatever access method you set up (key, code, lockbox).
Walk-through and priorities
If you're home for the first cleaning, we do a quick 10-minute walk-through together. You show us your home, point out any priority areas, mention concerns (allergies, delicate surfaces, off-limits rooms), and share your preferences.
We bring in supplies and equipment
We bring all our own eco-friendly supplies and equipment. Vacuum, mop, cleaning products, microfiber cloths, brushes โ everything we need. You don't need to provide anything unless you want us to use specific products from your home.
Systematic top-to-bottom cleaning
We work in a specific order that maximizes efficiency: top to bottom, and typically starting with the "wet rooms" (bathrooms, kitchen) first because they take the longest. Then bedrooms, living areas, and floors last (so we don't have to re-clean them).
Deep detail work
The first cleaning is always more thorough than routine cleanings. We're establishing baseline โ cleaning inside appliances, wiping baseboards, scrubbing grout, dusting light fixtures. Details that regular cleaning skips.
Floor work and final walkthrough
Vacuuming and mopping happen last, working backwards toward the exit. Then we do a quick final walkthrough of each room, checking our work and touching up anything missed.
Final checkout
If you're home, we do a walkthrough with you and answer any questions. If you're not home, we send you before/after photos or a text update. Payment is handled based on how you set up your account (card on file, cash, or invoicing).
How Long Does It Actually Take?
First-time deep cleanings take longer than recurring cleanings. Here's the honest breakdown:
Small home (1-2 bedrooms): 3-4 hours for a first cleaning
Medium home (3 bedrooms): 4-6 hours for a first cleaning
Large home (4+ bedrooms): 5-8 hours for a first cleaning
Homes that haven't been professionally cleaned in a long time (or ever) can take even longer. It's completely normal. We're doing months' worth of built-up cleaning in one visit.
Think of it like baseline maintenance. The first visit isn't just cleaning what you can see โ it's addressing the buildup in places most people forget: inside the microwave, behind the toilet, in the corners of baseboards, on top of ceiling fans. Once these are handled, future cleanings can focus on maintenance rather than restoration.
What's Included in Your First Cleaning
A first-time deep cleaning includes everything a regular cleaning does โ plus significantly more detail work. Here's what to expect:
Kitchen
All surfaces deep cleaned. Inside microwave. Inside oven (usually). Cabinet fronts wiped. Behind and under small appliances. Sink and faucet polished. Floors swept and mopped.
Bathrooms
Toilets deep cleaned inside and out. Showers and tubs scrubbed (including grout). Mirrors polished. Counters and vanities sanitized. Chrome fixtures polished. Floors mopped.
Bedrooms and living areas
All surfaces dusted. Baseboards wiped. Ceiling fans wiped. Light fixtures dusted. Furniture polished (using your preferred method). Vacuuming and mopping.
Throughout the home
Windows and mirrors polished. Doorknobs and light switches sanitized. Air vents dusted. All trash emptied. All floors vacuumed and mopped.
Common Concerns and Honest Answers
Will you judge how dirty my home is?
No. I promise. Whatever your home looks like, we've seen worse. And we've seen better. It doesn't matter to us. We're here to make it clean, not to judge.
What if I don't like the results?
Tell us. Immediately. Any reputable cleaning service (including ours) will address concerns and re-clean anything that wasn't done to your satisfaction. Communication is key.
Is it awkward if I'm home during the cleaning?
Not for us. You can do your normal routine โ work, watch TV, take a nap. We move around you. Most first-time clients feel awkward the first time and completely comfortable by the second visit.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Life happens. Just give us as much notice as possible (24+ hours is ideal). We understand and we'll work with you.
Should I tip?
Tips are appreciated but never expected. If you feel we did an exceptional job, a tip is a wonderful way to say thanks. But please don't feel obligated.
After the First Cleaning
Once your first cleaning is done, here's what typically happens next:
You come home to a clean house (if you were out). This is when most first-time clients text me a photo or a happy message. It's my favorite part of my job.
You decide next steps. Some clients want to switch immediately to bi-weekly recurring cleaning. Others prefer to try one more clean before committing. Both are fine.
Your feedback helps future cleanings. After the first visit, we take notes on your preferences, priorities, and any special situations. Every future cleaning gets better because we know your home more intimately.
The Truth About First Cleanings
Here's what I want every first-time client to know:
Your first cleaning is the beginning of a relationship. If it goes well, you'll wonder why you didn't hire help sooner. If it goes poorly, tell us so we can fix it โ because we want to earn a long-term client, not just make one sale.
Every family, every home, every routine is different. There's no "perfect" cleaning service that works for everyone. What matters is finding a service that fits your specific needs โ one that listens, adjusts, and treats your home like it matters.
When we walk into your home for the first time, we're not just cleaning it. We're earning your trust. That's how our business has grown for 8 years in Maryland โ one home, one family, one clean at a time.
If you have any specific questions about your upcoming first cleaning with us, feel free to call me at (301) 518-8792 or contact us through our website. I'd rather answer your questions before we arrive than have you feel anxious about anything.
